The day between the first and second round of the Women’s Club Championship went very slowly for me. I was 6 shots in the lead and didn’t know how the day would end on Saturday after the second and final round.
Saturday was a long, stressful, yet fun round of golf. The front nine were my “warm up holes”. It was hard to focus on my game 100% as I haven’t played competitively in quite some time. There are some strong personalities out on the golf course, especially when playing with women and my mental game needed some adjusting which I figured out on the back 9.
But, when it came down to it, I played consistently, and began to focus on my game on the 10th tee. I felt a bit like Shia Labeouf in the scene in the movie “The Greatest Game Ever Played” when he focused so hard that he picked his head up and 4 holes later he was finished with the round. I don’t know how to describe it, but I lost track of who shot what on each hole, what hole I was on and in the end the outcome was quite funny.
I was lucky. I played significantly better on the back 9, with the help of a caddie that I ended up asking to join me on the back. I wanted to have someone to talk to, and it was hard to talk to the caddie (although he was awesome) when he was caddying for the two other women I was playing against simultaneously.
The 18th hole was a par three. I wasn’t hitting my driver consistently the entire round, so I pulled out my seven wood, hit a 170 yard shot off the tee and kept the 7 wood in hand and walked to my second shot. My second shot left me with a short chip and two putts for a bogey. I looked up, and there I saw my mother, father, brother and sister-in-law smiling and clapping. I was then greeted by the great, Mr. Mike Burke, the head golf pro at the club and he shook my hand and congratulated me. I HAD NO IDEA THAT I WON!
I was so focused on my game, and thought I was playing horribly compared to the other players, that I assumed I would lose! 🙂
I am now the 2014 Women’s Club Champion of Montammy Golf Club! I am very excited and can’t wait to hit the links this weekend.
Thank you all for your support! A special thank you to Mike Burke and the golf pros at Montammy for their support and a big thank you to my family (especially my mom, who followed me during the second round) for supporting me and rooting for me from the start.
Till next week!
